HAS IT ALL BEEN SAID BEFORE?

Don’t forget that Choerilus of Samos was wondering that back in the 5th century B.C., when he wrote:

“The arts are all fenced in now, the field parceled out, And we, the latecomers scratched from the race, No room to bring up a new-yoked chariot.”

Well, there have been a few innovations in style since then.

NOT SINCE EDWINA MOUNTBATTEN

in her palmy days have high heels resonated like Nancy P’s.

But will it all have been for naught?

INTERESTING

If you watch the 1964 Kirov Shades w/Fedicheva & Soloviev, the tempo for the third “slow” (begins slow) soloist variation is the same as what was played during Doug Fullington’s Imperial restoration program at the Guggenheim several years ago.

Faster than played now at ABT and certainly at the now once-more Mariinsky.

Undoubtedly somewhat adjusted for individual dancers, but I guess only in the 1970s did the Kirov really start to slow things down.

You could say technically the variation is more difficult now–to start off very slow and then have to shift gears so dramatically.

But even as adagio was refined at the Kirov in the 1960s, ballerinas like Makarova and Osipenko (who’d excelled in that variation early in their careers) weren’t allowed to drag.

BUT REALLY —

I love the way that Nancy P. got her high heels out on that Capitol floor and grew roots with them.

Expensive shoes are nice, and talk is invigorating, but action is better–corral that caucus and say No, Leader Pelosi.

WHAT are THOSE GESTURES?

A book needs to be written about Trump’s body language.

When he practices his own mutation of what is meant to be an acknowledgement of the audience’s applause–like at the SOTU when the GOP leapt to their feet and drooled over his every line–he vulgarizes the gesture until he turns it into a self-congratulatory, “See how much they love me?”and “Don’t I deserve no less?”

Oh, and Trevor Noah’s got a hilarious and right on-segment visualizing Trump and his equally off-pitch penchant for hand swishes as a stand up monologist. He’s like the Supremes on steroids.

THE MILITARY BUDGET THAT ATE AMERICA

Sen. Schumer has nothing to crow about: once again, the Dems are signing off on a gargantuan, completely unnecessary increase in the military budget.

Our military budget is three times what it was twenty years ago and the world is a lot less secure. It is almost more than the rest of the world’s put together. Something is not working. Talk about “throwing money at the problem.” We could get a better result for half the expenditure.

THE TRUMP DYNASTY

Trump wants a staff that will find a way to secure him carte blanche to indulge in wholesale criminality with complete impunity. So far it hasn’t happened, and that’s why he’s going for another shake-up.

Of course griftress Ivanka is pushing for it–she is nothing more than a chip off the old block.

Who will damn well clap when they’re cued to clap.

SPEAKING OF OPERA SATIRES

Another one I didn’t mind is 1935’s Metropolitan. Well, if you can hear/see Lawrence Tibbett in a host of different excerpts, what is there to be offended by?
