THE HUMAN PREDICAMENT

(One of them.)

We can be brilliant about individual areas of inquiry and investigation, but we are so blinkered when it comes to common sense.

Cosseted in her fever dream of coronation, Hillary Clinton thought she’d cruise to primary victory by telling us how little she would do for us and how much she wanted to work with Republican extremists.

Now she’s done a massive flip-flip and says she’s for coal after being against it as a clean energy source. Oh, and she loves nuclear power.

Come to think of it, if the human race had any common sense, would it have created nuclear power? Low-level radiation produced daily, ever-present danger of meltdown, waste that stays high-level radioactive for thousands of years–how clean can you get?

This is what’s called electable in todays world of rancid “punditry.”

Does this woman, btw, realize how close Indian Point is to her Chappaqua home, and does she have any idea of what’s going on with radioactivity-contaminated ground water there?

THE TRUTH ABOUT WEIMAR

History prof Eric Weitz writes at CommonDreams:

“Weimar Germany did not collapse under the weight of its various crises. It was actively destroyed by a conservative elite – noble landowners, high-level state officials, businessmen, army officers – that chose to ally with the Nazi Party.”

IF…

the Democrats have any political chops they can muster up–a big “if” if ever there was one–they will hang around the neck of the GOP its seditious and unconstitutional collusion re: the Supreme Court nominee.

Democrats-in-name-only take a gander at Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren’s recent speech on the Senate floor.

DEFINING DOWN ELITISM

In our society, you’re no longer an elitist if you’re a billionaire demanding cuts to the $15,000 per year Social Security benefits of retired wait staff–

No, what now generally gets you called an elitist is having cultural interests that are not corporate profit centers.

Therefore, it was doubly good that Obama referred to “Republican elites” when attributing blame for the rise of Trump.

WITHOUT SHAME

Matt Taibbi at Rolling Stone writes about the ludicrous sight of the same GOP shills and pols who sold GW Bush’s ignorance and incompetence to the public as ASSETS now suddenly foaming with outrage over Trump.

Bush led to Trump–Taibbi explains how.

THE CHIEF COMES THROUGH

Marvin handed me an advance copy of the new, Spring 2016 Ballet Review, and man, is it a doozie!

If this doesn’t have something to satisfy every kinetic palate, I don’t know what could.

LET’S MOVE ON

Locke’s comment to me about Nancy R was so unflattering that I think I’ll skip it–

let’s just stay with Locke’s characterization of her as a hypocrite. . .

DON’T GET ME STARTED

You know, I wasn’t going to say anything about Nancy Reagan, but the bi-partisan snow job going on now, led of course by Hillary Clinton’s revolting and absurd paean to the Reagans’ non-existent AIDS advocacy, really makes me want to quote what actress Katherine Locke, who acted with Tallulah on Bway in 1941, and knew Nancy back in her acting days, had to say to me about her in 1993.

Let’s say, while I look up the quote, that Nancy was a bit of a hypocrite.

WHO COULD PLAY TALLULAH?

Someone in publishing was asking me that the other day.

The entertainment biz still doesn’t get it: the thing to do is not to laboriously try to imitate her inimitable Alabama/New York/London accent or the timbre of her voice as it sounded in her final, gravelly years.

Instead find a woman who can act, hopefully has good bone structure and ash-blonde hair or a face that looks good framed by hair dyed ash-blonde.

Then let said actress (No I am not giving up that word), act, rather than mimic the part.
