MEET THE NEW BUSH, SAME AS THE OLD BUSH

Jeb Bush’s foreign policy advisers are the same dishonest, incompetent global menaces who guided his brother’s hand into the disastrous wars that Obama is now perpetuating.

Bill Berkowitz at buzzflash for truth out explains exactly why these people should be behind bars instead of preparing to direct another admnistration into more international carnage and conflalgration.

And on the (in this case not) boob tube, Melissa Harris-Perry rightly jeers.

IF THAT DOESN’T SAY IT ALL, PART. . . .

Now vacant: the retail space that housed the small, unique, independent Ballet Shop on Broadway, just around the corner from Lincoln Center.

I spent many an hour browsing and many a dollar purchasing there thirty and more years ago.

Recently it was some type of of Verizon or other mega-telecom outlet, and, rents being as astronomical as they are, it now stands empty.

Residential rents too are out of sight in the area, which is why so many of the performers who make Lincoln Center hum now live long distances away from it.

Our successive mayoralties have done virtually nothing to ensure that Manhattan stays a thriving capital of the performing arts.

Columbus Avenue, where so many dancers used to live, was also once a concentration of small businesses; it is now so impersonal and pretentious that a resident described living near it as living inside of a mall. Gentrification hardly seems even to do justice to what’s happened there.

What happens when the support systems and the ancillary industries and communities are allowed to wither is that the foundation for a Lincoln Center begins to erode.

OF FLIGHT PATTERNS AND LASSO TWIRLING

The Barre Flies sample (and of course review) Justin Peck’s new work for New York City Ballet. You know where to go.

DON’T BE SO NAIVE

Sahil Kapur at Talkingpointsmemo quotes prominent law professors claiming that Chief Justice Roberts is concerned with preserving the integrity of the Supreme Court and that’s why he won’t go along with the current suit targeting Obamacare.

Please.

If Justice Roberts does vote to allow the intention of the law to be upheld–thereby adhering to a bedrock principal of judicial construction–it will be to give himself cover to continue to take an acetylene torch to democracy as it has previously existed in this country, to continue his attack on civil society as we’ve known it, on the rights of the individual vs. the corporation, on the right to vote, et. al., et. al.

Kapur himself understands that while Robert voted to save Obamacare in 2012, he did so as a means to an end, to advance radical conservative ideology, by calling the requirement that people be insured a penalty. He was also able then to simulate the appearance of objectivity while actually diminishing the law by ruling that the states could opt out of Medicaid expansion.

As previously noted on talkingpoints, the defense in the current litigation is advancing the argument that the integrity of the SC rests on its not getting behind a blatently political law suit. That of course is true–the last semblance of credibility and objectivity will go out the window if Roberts sides with the rest of the right-wing-extremist majority.

BILL O’REILLY AND FOX SHOULD BE PROSECUTED FOR HATE SPEECH

The dishonest, ignorant, and inflammatory “news” demagogue calls for holy war against ISIS. Goodbye USA and civilization as we treasure it should that occur.

I mean, how much has this country done to destroy itself as a response to 9/11??

Does O’Reilly have the right to villify and defame the globe’s entire Muslim population?

And let’s not forget that these TV stations get to use our airwaves absolutely for free! What a great gig-toxicify the public on the dole!!

STUDIO TALK NOT PILLOW TALK

Thinking back I don’t remember ever hearing Elena in the studio be sarcastic or mocking to a dancer in the old Russian manner. But she also never told dancers how beautiful they were. She would after a performance sometimes use superlatives. But the studio was for work and for improvement. She’d say “Not bad,” or “Better,” or “Good.” None of that coaching-by-compliment that today produces gargantuan egos, gargantuan complacency, and gargantuan unfulfilled artistic potential. It’s the dancers’  lovers or the critics who should be telling them how beautiful they are–not their coaches.

ELENA TCHERNICHOVA

She was someone special, and she enjoyed being treated like someone special.

She recalled wanting to see sold-out performances at New York City Ballet, and Peter Martins escorting her to his own seat in the auditorium while he then watched from backstage. Yes, she liked that.

On at least one, but I think maybe two occasions during the 1980s Martins asked her to leave ABT and join the artistic staff of NYCB.  She said No for a number of reasons, but actually she coached some ABT dancers in Balanchine, perhaps the first being Makarova in Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux for a gala in the late-1970s.

I talked with her about Balanchine rep and style many times. She had her own ideas about it and she also respected the people who had actually worked with Balanchine. I remember her suggesting to Baryshnikov in 1983 that Gelsey Kirkland coach dancers in Symphonie Concertante, which ABT had just reconstructed.

FASCINATING RHYTHMS GALORE

You won’t leave City Center this weekend humming the scenery. No way. Not with those intoxicating Gershwin-Gershwin tunes powering the Encores reconstruction of 1924’s Lady, Be Good. And the book for this show is loads of wisecracking fun–written by Guy Bolton, as auspicious a musical-comedy librettist as the Gershwins were inspired tunesmiths. A delight from start to finish!

SCURRYING–BUT NOT AIMLESSLY

Today I’m seeing Behind the Scenes, a 1914 silent with Mary Pickford playing an actress who might not want to give up her career for marriage. At least at first. RADICAL. Not for life in 1914, but for cinema’s depiction of same.

It’s part of MOMA’s ongoing series Carte Blanche: Women’s Film Preservation Fund–Women Writing the Language of Cinema.

And then before the last showing at the Film Society of Lincoln Center on Februray 12, I want to see Ballet 422, which gives us backstory on the creation by Justin Peck for New York City Ballet of Paz de la Jolla. I’ve seen the 422 trailer and it looks highly-defined indeed and the dancing is great!

Then it goes into release nationwide.

COMPLEXITIES BE GONE

Robert Parry at ConsortiumNews confronts the war-mongering reality of the neo-cons who stampeded us into the fraudulent, disastrous and never-ending war on Iraq doing it all over again, fomenting a war with Russia over Ukraine.  They do so by using cartoon-comic-book characterization of events and individuals, but Parry will spell it out as only he can.
