STALINIST NEWS NETWORK

Fox News really is the closest thing we’ve got on TV to a Soviet media enterprise of the 1930s.

The innuendo. The provocation. The defamation. The intolerance. The lies.

And the projection. Isn’t it funny how the human squawkboxes who most irresponsibly and opportunistically question patriotism are themselves the most totalitarian?

ANOTHER NYC HOSPITAL SUCCUMBS TO CONDOS

Walking past what was Cabrini Hospital on East 19th Street in Manhattan, I’ve wondered how the buildings were going to be reused after the hospital closed in 2008.  I should have known.

GOP DEFUNDS THE VA, THEN BLAME DEMS

Watching Bernie Sanders on Ed Schultz just made it more distressingly apparent how totally inept Obama and his advisors are about reacting to Republican sabotage.

It happens time after time:

the GOP cuts funding for essential public services.

Essential public services break down.

The GOP blames the Democrats.

The Democrats tuck their tail between their legs.

Allowing Shinseki–who, as we know, rightly opposed our Iraq catastrophe and thus has been in the cross hairs of the GOP ever since–to resign, allowing Democratic caucus members to call for his resignation, is hardly surprising given the spineless condition of today’s Democratic Party, but it is deplorable in any case.

By contrast to Democratic leadership, Schultz and Sanders were blunt about how very likely it is that the GOP will use this crisis–which is the inevitable consequence of their funding cuts as well, of course, as their advocacy of endless war– to call for privatization of yet another essential public service.

MIMI PAUL WAS MOVED

earlier this week by a free concert at the Kennedy Cent;er. Arvo Part’s work “conveyed minimalist beauty through paired down compositions that were meditations of life, faith and death.” The composer was in attendance “able to hear his music played with purity and commitment by the Tallinn chamber Orchestra, accompanied by the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir.”  The house was full and Part was kept on stage, Mimi reports for “an extended standing ovation.” He, too, was clearly moved.

WEST VIEW NEWS INFORMS

I didn’t know that Sinclair Lewis had once lived in the West Village. But I’m reading about that in the May issue of the West View News.  This paper is great at informing us about the days when the Village was a haven for artists and intellectuals–many of them penurious–and keeping us abreast of what’s going down today in the Village, where one of the city’s major hospitals was torn down to make way for more condos.
