Stage star Jeanne Eagels was one of the most magical performers ever captured on film. The original Sadie Thompson in Rain on Broadway, btw.
1916’s The World and the Woman starring Eagels in a rather Sadie Thompson-ish role, has just been restored by the George Eastman Museum and was shown last week at MOMA, hosted by David Stenn. I couldn’t go but I heard that the tinted restoration is just beautiful.
This silent needs to be released; I’ve seen the unrestored version twice– anyone who cares about acting needs to see it.
