WHY IS THIS ON THE HOME PAGE OF NYTIMES.COM?

[Late Monday night:]

“Fearing a trade war that could damage economic gains from their tax cut, Republicans, including House Speaker Paul D. Ryan, appealed to President Trump to relent on his steel and aluminum tariffs.”

WHAT economic gains have their tax cut precipitated? Is this again a question of “someone” kvelling to a reporter about ostensible gains? Where is the proof?

The paraphrase is repeated in the article. But properly stated, this would read: “Fearing a trade war that could damage economic gains the GOP claims their tax cut has produced. . . ”

Postscript: This has now [Tues. am] been slightly revised at NYTimes.com, both in the article and, more so, in the home-page tease. I hope they’ve learned something.
