LEARN FROM LISA DELLA CASA

Her “Mi Tradi” in Czinner’s 1954 Don Giovanni is one of the greatest pieces of operatic acting ever filmed, which means it’s one of the greatest pieces of acting on film. Torn by different, completely warring emotions–hate, love, pity–she is so moving.

And no, it’s not naturalistic–it’s operatic, and it’s on an entirely different, equally truthful, and actually equally internal plane of rhetoric and expression from what you just saw in the movie theater last night.

And did I mention she’s singing the entire time? Beautifully, too.
