“DRYADS OF WEST 55th STREET”

That’s what I’m calling my essay on the stylish ballerinas of 1950s New York City Ballet for the exhibition catalogue to the Fashion Institute of Technology’s upcoming show: “Ballerina: Fashion’s Modern Muse.”

My title is a riff on Le Clercq’s being described a “dryad of Fifth Avenue” in Afternoon of a Faun.
