Under de Blasio, the Landmarks Preservation Commission has become an agency that thwarts more than fosters landmark preservation. Its complicity is one of the most shameful aspects of the Tech Hub scam. Only the hubris of then-Chair Scrinivasan (hubristic because she had the full backing of the Mayor) could have come up with something as outlandish as her insistence that LPC would only consider for designation SEVEN! buildings in the Tech Hub environs.
Now, with Scrinivasan out, and with a thicket of lawsuits past, present and future impeding LPC’s self-disablement, things may be different.
In any case, the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation is now submitting a proposal for landmark district designation for this amazingly historic, elegant, and largely low-rise area between 14th St. and Astor Place, soon to be leveled unless landmark protection is given.
