I was minding my own business, taking a walk down a country road, everything absolutely still and quiet, the fields covered with snow —
when I get a phone call from someone who’d read the latest New York Times piece on Peter Martins.
The more I heard about, and when I sat down to read it later that evening–it kind of made me want to wash my hands of ballet, for a number of reasons, which I’ll enumerate in time.
But to begin with —
is it not incredible that the writer announced w/o a trace of irony that a coaching position has been found for Martins–the very same Martins who fought like a demon to keep out out of New York City Ballet every ex-dancer whose coaching could have made a profound difference to performance quality?
