At 33rd Street and Fifth Avenue, the Demarest building is an architecturally outstanding remnant of old Fifth Avenue, one of the very few remaining–the Landmarks Preservation Commission’s refusal to designate an extension of the Madison Square North historic district has unleashed escalating obliteration of what remains.
Now more greedy developers want to demolish the Demarest and build yet another huge tower.
Go to Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation’s web site and you’ll find an easy way to let Landmarks know you believe this building should not be demolished. It meets every possible criteria for designated landmark status.
