Remember how in “Dryads of West 55th Street” I wrote about New York City Ballet ballerinas putting on the dog whenever they left the stage door?
Well, perhaps not always whenever.
In the Hollywood Reporter, Mike Connolly wrote on July 22, 1955:
“Nobody sipped champagne from a ballerina’s slipper at Jimmy Doolittle’s post-show party at the Los Feliz Brown Derby but they belted the bourbon and scotch and it turned into a real sociable downing. . . Tanaquil Le Clercq, who looks like Audrey Hepburn and Moira Shearer on stage, looked like Mary Pickford in ‘Sudsy’ [Suds]. No make-up, no comb.”
