It would be good to recall John F. Kennedy’s words spoken in September, 1960 at the Greater Houston Ministerial Association, (quoted in Larry Tye’s Bobby Kennedy: The Making of a Liberal Icon):
“When any man stands on the steps of the Capitol and takes the oath of office of President, he is swearing to uphold the separation of church and state. If he breaks his oath, he is not only committing a crime against the Constitution. . . he is committing a sin against God.”
