Twenty yeas ago my father wrote a piece recalling his year abroad at the University of Frankfurt in the early 1950s. He was disturbed by the reluctance of Germans, even liberals and humanists, to acknowledge their recent past. Confronted in the early 00s by Bush/Cheney’s trashing of our civil rights, he was forced to draw partial parallels.
