It’s not only the clotted, whiny delivery and the chipmunk scowl, it’s the ridiculously florid, Trumpian gestures. Vance is someone whose basic personality is a tabula rasa: he has no core convictions or principles, and he will take on the coloration of anyone powerful around him. He’s yet another reminder that in today’s America, you don’t need any legitimate qualifications whatsoever to get ahead in politics.
