“set us up as a nation to become as mismanaged as we are presenting ourselves to be at this moment,” Harry Belafonte says in the 2020 documentary, “The Sit-In: Harry Belafonte Hosts the Tonight Show.” It’s about the week in 1968 when Belafonte deputized for Johnny Carson and invited both men to be guests. “The death of those two leaders “changed the American climate severely.” Belafonte rendered that opinion on camera in2017, five years before he died. He had written an editorial in The New York Times that ran just prior to the 2016 election, warning America of what a Trump presidency would mean.
