That’s how Greg Mitchell responds to Niall Ferguson’s cringe-making statement in Newsweek that when he and Paul Ryan dined together in 2010, “Ryan blew me away. I have wanted to see him in the White House ever since.” As so many have commented by now, Ferguson’s piece is a catastrophe for his reputation and for Newsweek’s credibility. The fact that they would go on the record with a piece as shoddy and dishonest and vicious as this one tells you something about today’s “mainstream” commercial media.
But all that pales before my real question today: at the Ferguson-Ryan tête-à-tête, was the wine as expensive as the $350 a bottle stuff that Ryan was seen quafing last summer with a hedge fund manager and an economics professor at a DC restaurant, sort of in the early stages of his campaign to destroy Medicare, Social Security, and Medicaid? And right, I may add, in the middle of the Republican budget-ceiling shakedown to which Obama shamefully capitulated, making massive cuts to essential services for people who’ve never seen a $350 bottle of wine in their lives.
