GOODBYE ARTS CRITICISM: GOODBYE ARTS

Alex Ross at The New Yorker prognosticates “The Fate of the Critic in the Clickbait Age”

Again, like so much of our MBA-and-mogul-dictated editorial content, eliminating arts criticism does not reflect the reality of what many people are doing: “critic-free cities still have well-attended opera houses and orchestras, which loom large in local cultural economies.”

Nevertheless the lack of media exposure is crippling the arts.

The point is, editor dunderheads, content that is not the most click-intensive may still serve an important public as well as consumer interest.

Remember public interest?

Remember consumer interest?

And the “mainstream” media wonders why it’s in freefall.

The more the media chases trends rather than setting its own agenda, the more weak and irrelevant it becomes.
