AOC PUTS VICIOUS, LYING DINGBAT MARSHA BLACKBURN IN HER PLACE

Sen. Blackburn cites low gas prices in 2020 as a way to indict Pres. Biden for . . . something. Forgets to mention that America was quarantining at the time.

AOC won’t stand for it: “Unemployment also hit 14.8% in 2020, the highest rate ever seen in the US since data collection began,” she tweets. “Does the Senator want to jump to claim that as Trump’s legacy too? Or would we rather examine context and data like adults?”

ABOUT THAT REDEMPTION TOUR, MR. BARR. . .

“Barr’s overweening egotism, so flamboyantly displayed in his new book and accompanying promotional appearances, is second only to Donald Trump himself,” Heather Digby Parton writes at Salon.

Barr is, as always, the same right-wing extremist he’s always been–except now more so. “In his book, Barr rails against everything and everyone to the left of Ted Cruz,” Parton writes. “Barr goes to incredible lengths to excuse Trump’s crude and ignorant behavior as president.”

Barr committed perjury and obstruction of justice on multiple occasions. Barr’s memoir is an example of corporate publishing at its most toxic. He is a criminal who should never have been given a platform at all, let alone being so overpaid for his book that William Morrow had to set up a publicity blitz to try to recoup their money–and I don’t think they will.

WE MUST NEVER FORGET

the Bush/Cheney war crimes that led directly to Trump.

Twenty yeas ago my father wrote a piece recalling his year abroad at the University of Frankfurt in the early 1950s. He was disturbed by the reluctance of Germans, even liberals and humanists, to acknowledge their recent past. Confronted in the early 00s by Bush/Cheney’s trashing of our civil rights, he was forced to draw partial parallels.

I write about his chronicle of history’s cyclic repetition (albeit always with a new, unique set of topical triggers) for the WestView News.

TUCKER’S CATTY, BITCHY DRIVEL

is deconstructed by Philip Bump in the Washington Post.

As usual, Tucker aimed his venom at a woman of far greater intellect and stature than himself.

Bump notes the absurdity of Tucker, “a longtime television talking head. . .disparaging the intellect and capabilities of a former district attorney, elected senator and sitting vice president of the United States. In part, this disparagement was based on a handful of occasions in which Harris tripped over public remarks, unintentionally reinforcing Carlson’s measure of intellect and competence: being able to speak well on television. It’s like a minor league middle relief pitcher mocking a cardiologist’s first pitch.”

U.S. FOSSIL FUEL INDUSTRY ALREADY EXPLOITING THE TRAGEDY IN UKRAINE

In the Guardian, Rep. Grijalva decries the drill-baby-drill propaganda ambush that the industry began lobbing at the U.S. within hours of the Russian invasion. “We can’t let the fossil-fuel industry scare us into a domestic drilling free-for-all that is neither economically warranted nor environmentally sound.”

THE REMARKABLE MODESTY OF LISE DAVIDSEN: THE VOICE WITH A NOSE

From a correspondent who attended last night’s season premiere of Ariadne auf Naxos at the Met:

“This immense 35-year-old talent sings Ariadne at the Met now (sadly to shockingly empty houses). It is a remarkable performance, utterly devoid of artistic touches — which I say with the greatest of admiration, for with nature there is no need for self-consciousness or even originality, just for music and good taste. It is thus simultaneously a modest, self-effacing approach and an electrifying one. Any comparison to Nilsson is off: Davidsen has a warm tone and eclectic vibrato that balances her secure pitch with a hint of danger. She is a bit more of what I think of as the Flagstad sound. And yet there is a pleasing harshness when the decibels go off the chart, common to Nilsson and other very large voices, as if the mask vibrations are slamming into one another, which leaves a lovely bitter aftertaste, like a great Burgundy, to remind us that we are dealing with living matter here. One might say that, like a great burgundy, this is a voice with a large nose. Here is the first great Ariadne of the work’s second century.

The supporting cast is more than adequate, including a charming Isabel Leonard as the Composer, the smartly-sung sweetness of Brandon Jovanovich as Bacchus. Marek Janowski conducted with authority and taste through the brass could use a bit more discipline. Brenda Rae flitted and flirted and even sang some of her most difficult music while hoisted aloft by her compatriots; one can only imagine the condition of her abdominal muscles. The staging was fresh; it seemed fresher than when the production was new.

The comedians were quite amusing, almost Dadaesque. The Major-Domo, Wolfgang Brendel, may have mugged just a bit too much but he certainly became a major character, perhaps even the prime mover of the whole event which, it was suggested, was payback for an intemperate remark of the Music Master; this is quite far from the sang-froid boredom of the late Nico Castel who seemingly could barely stay awake when addressing the rabble. Johannes Martin Kranzle as the Music Master and Brenton Ryan as the Dancing Master provided solid support above and below. The three desert island dames were wonderful, particularly Tamara Mumford as Dryad, a Lindemann laureate and potentially a major artist with her extremely warm color and ample volume – perhaps a Carmen someday soon.

Sean Michael Plumb making his debut as Harlekin has a bright, lyrical and very full sound and an equally bright future perhaps as Ford or Tonio. Welcome, sir.”

WHY ISN’T BILL BARR UNDER INDICTMENT?

I mean, if he’s going to embark on a book-promotion blitz, he might as well face a little accountability, no?

Barr betrayed this country, turning the Department of Justice into a personal law firm for Herr Trump.

Barr obstructed justice on numerous occasions.

Barr enthusiastically supported Trump’s every whim, participating in the Big Lie conspiracy before renouncing it when things got too crazy.

The fact that Biden’s administration has apparently decided to turn a blind eye to all of this makes one wonder if “looking forward not back” is some kind of vision impairment.
