The Mayor is upzoning NYC out of existence. His latest target is Soho/Noho, and both City Hall and its allied real estate developers dissemble shamelessly.

Andrew Berman wrote for City Limits.com his analysis of “Affordable Housing as Trojan Horse in Soho and Noho.”

“Dishonestly, they gloss over neighbors’ true objections to the plan’s overscaled towers of largely luxury housing, claiming opponents are resisting affordabele housing rather than new construction of a neighborhood-shattering scale.”

Berman identifies “the false dichotomy promulgated by real estate interests and the de Blasio administration that the only way to get new affordable housing in New York City is to grant massive bonuses to luxury and market-rate housing developers.These bonuses vastly increase the developers’ profits and the size of their new buildings, but require only a small payback of affordable housing in return.”

and one reason he didn’t is the Democrats’ continued refusal to vanquish the promiscuously yet surgically applied “socialist” smear the GOP keeps throwing a them. It is now leading to alternate-reality backstory, for instance, certified moron Senator-elect Tommy Tubberville of Alabama, who now claims that WWII was waged to “fight the socialist agenda.”

Socialist subsidy for the rich is the bedrock of GOP policy, and yet Democrats don’t seem to want to drive that point home to voters. It would be nice as well, if they actually challenged GOP pols to explain what, in fact, they think that “socialism” actually is.

Ronald Koatz was a friend of mine at Columbia–the nicest guy you can imagine. Instead of “Joel,” he liked to call me “Noël,” which always used to amuse me. Well, I’ve been going through hundreds of letters and cards I kept in two bellows folders, sorting them into individual file folders by name, subject, etc.

When today I came across a communique addressed to good old “Noël,” I cracked up. A friend happened to call, and I told him about it, and he laughed, too.

Not entirely sure why, but it’s absurdly funny.
