DESHOWITZ HAS NO COMPUNCTION ABOUT THROWING HIS REPUTATION AWAY

Outright defense of treason by Dershowitz.

To George Stephanopoulos:

“Look, it would be good for the American public if President Trump sat down and said everything he knows, but it wouldn’t be good for President Trump.”

And Dershowitz, of course, is siding with Trump.

A CORRESPONDENT’S SUMMER 2018 ROUNDUP (GLYNDEBOURNE)

Back in May, I was treated to a Rosenkavalier at Glyndebourne. Uncharacteristically, the weather was perfect, such that I was forced to purchase a Panama hat at the concession. I confess I drank just a bit too much champagne before the show. But, at the Long Interval, I reclaimed my dignity by drinking a bit too much champagne again. This revival of the Richard Jones’ cartoonish production (sets and costumes, perhaps a bit too campy for my taste, by Paul Steinberg and Nicky Gillibrand) really worked, particularly in the small theatre, stripping down the cultural references and releasing the characters from history. Lots of nice things about Kate Lindsey’s buttery Octavian and Brindley Sherrat’s idiomatic Ochs (imagine an evening of leider here in NY with such an original as Sherrat). The remarkably bright projection of acting-tenor Alun Rhys-Jenkins’ Valzacchi gave this character disproportionate important. But special word must be said about Rachael Willis-Sorensen, a truly lush (American) Marschallin soprano, a big voice, a beautiful presence. Watch for her Donna Anna at the Met starting late January and the first two weeks of February opposite the legendary Peter Mattei.

NEGATIVE SOUND IS NOT A DIMINSHMENT

“I’ve had more power over an audience with a silence,” Mary Garden writes in her 1951 memoirs, “than I ever had with a note. . . That’s where I would look if I went into an opera house hunting for a genius-I would look into their silences.”

THE ENTIRE GOP SENATE CAUCUS GUILTY OF OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE

Their insistence that Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearings go ahead despite evidence of Trump’s criminality is their rear-guard attempt to ensure legal immunity for Trump.

Trump will be placed above the law.

WHY IS IT

that useful idiot Sen. Collins skipped out of her meeting aflutter with excitement that Brett Kavanaugh had assured her that abortion rights were settled law —

but to Sen. Schumer Kavanaugh refused to say anything at all on the subject?

And why is it that an implicated criminal is now able to select Supreme Court judges to exonerate him?

THE SCRINIVASAN SCHOOL OF “PRESERVATION”

Last year, a vast coalition of civic and state politcos requested expansion of the Madison Square Park North historic district. Urban devastation going on in its surrounding blocks is carrying away one unprotected historic building after another.

Then-LPC chair Scrinivasan wasted no time swatting away earlier requests that this extremely historic area be preserved, thus allowing it to be further degraded as building after building has gone down.

Now her disreputable reign is over. We wait to see whether de Blasio will propose a director who is actually qualified and committed to upholding the LPC’s mission. And we wait to see whether LPC will finally receive adequate funding.

And we wait to see whether LPC will do right by what remains standing in these blocks that were once the nerve center of fashionable New York City.
