PELOSI & SCHUMER’S “GROSS INCOMPETENCE”

Yup, once again they’re dong their best to ensure that the Democrats lose.

John Atcheson at Common Dreams describes how “astonishingly, Pelosi and Schumer just announced that their big idea for the 2018 election is a Pay-Go rule, and they’ve refused to embrace Medicare for All and other bold progressive ideas that are supported by a majority of Democrats and Independents.”

DISGUSTING

John Roberts and his gaggle -of-right-wing-extremists Supreme Court double down on their war on voting rights.

The Dem must make the Supreme Court a campaign issue.

ELIZABETH WARREN GETS IT

Reminds the Democratic Establishment that they’re about to lose the midterms if they don’t abandon policies crafted by senile corruption.

Sen. Warren raps with Mehdi Hasan at The Intercept’s Deconstructed podcast.

SOME OF RUSSIA’S BIGGEST STARS

are on stage at BAM’s Harvey Theater in St. Petersburg’s Maly Theater Group’s production of Schiller’s  Love and Intrigue.

Not that they’re doing star turns. Ensemble fellowship rules the day–without, let me qualify again,  any loss of untrammeled flamboyance.

There’s superb acting all around, as director Lev Dodin tilts the production against the text at angles alternately refractive and neatly dovetailed. Sometimes he nearly parodies it, but then swoops in close to make its tale of abuse of power (written on the eve of the French Revolution) by the ethicless powerful, and its tragic consequences all the more unflinching.

It’s performed in Russian translation, and for those whose Russian is less exemplary (I’m totally kidding) than mine, there are English supertitles.

INDEPENDENT AND COUNTING

Just recommended to me: the Hickory Stick bookstore in Washington Depot, CT.

The store’s been doing things their way for over 60 years!

OUR CORPORATE CONTROLLED MEDIA

It’s bad enough what they’ve done to arts coverage —

but what they’re not doing to ensure a future for humanity is a bit more concerning.

Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. writes at Common Dreams:

‘In 2003, when environmental leader Laurie David and Arianna Huffington’s ‘Detroit Project’ attempted to air paid advertisements touting automobile fuel efficiency, all the networks—then raking in $15 billion annually from the auto industry—refused to carry the ads.”

In one more example of how deregulation has destroyed our society, Kennedy itemizes the regulations put in place to ensure what got on TV was not fake news–and how those regulations were gutted.

And Fox News, hello!

PAUL RYAN IS FULLY ON BOARD WITH OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE

One reason he’s getting out of the House may be to attempt to forestall legal jeopardy–because he can’t stop himself from endorsing and supporting criminal conspiracy. Witness his robo comments today parroting the “Freedom” Caucus’s plot to obstruct justice in the service of  betraying American democracy.

And these are the people for whom Pelosi and Hoyer want to fall on their sword?

WHO KNEW?

Mariinskiy intendant Ivan Vsevolozhsky turns out to have moonlighted as one of the great costume designer in balletic history.

That was clear in Sergei Vikharev’s 1999 restoration of The Sleeping Beauty. It’s also clear in Alexei Ratmansky’s delightful restoration of Petipa’s Harlequinade for ABT, in which Robert Perdziola’s design credit lists the 1900 originals as inspiration.

ABT performs it through Saturday night.

Together with Raymonda, and Vikharev’s 2007 restoration of The Awakening of Flora, we’ve got more than enough evidence as well to prove that in his final decade of creative work Petipa found ways to recap all his old tricks into piquant new magic acts.

Mary Cargill at Dance View Times takes stock of the old wines and the new bottles.
