KIDS, DO YOUR STUFF

The tapes that recently came to light show that Scott Pruitt is criminally insane or simply criminally dishonest. But he is a criminal. We have rarely heard such a mangled mish mash of distorted theology and capitalism-gone-beserk propaganda. How Pruitt is able to warp Christian doctrine to justify what he’s doing to the world is truly mind blowing. Pruitt says that the Second Amendment is divinely bequeathed.

Kids, this Kochs-protege is a menace to the very possibility of a future for this species. He is an proponent of every kind of violence. He needs to be excoriated in no uncertain terms.

BROADWAY DOES REACH TO ALBANY

The Broadway Advocacy Coalition and the Alliance For Quality Education are headed for Albany March 12, joining forces to “stand alongside parents from all over New York State, and tell the stories of education inequity through drama, song and dance.”

GUN ADVOCATE BETSY DeVOS VISITS PARKLAND

Predictably, this prime example of authoritarian double-think performance art didn’t go over well.

Education heroine Diane Ravitch reports, and directs us to Jessica Schladebeck’s account in the Daily News.

Naturally enough, DeVos refused to speak with actual students, as opposed to whatever animatronic abstraction whose needs she pretends to be representing.

One thing the Fascist Trump, Inc. syndicate cannot stand: being confronted by vocal constituents who won’t buy their bullshit.

CELEBRITY WORSHIP HAS KILLED JOURNALISM

I was at my local newstand–the fabled Casa Magazines–and yes, I picked up a magazine that had an article on an actor I’d be interested in reading about.

No offense, man —

But the hushed, breathless tone of the opening paragraph–No.

I put the magazine back on the rack.

YES, MULVANEY IS ANTI-SEMITIC, TOO

Just an all-around execrable kind of guy.

He’s adept at bigoted dog-whistles.

Jacob Sugarman at Alternet de-scrambles them loud and clear.

IMAGINE IF TRUMP HAD BEEN ASKED TO HOST THE OSCARS. . .

The U.S. government would have quite a different take on California’s sanctuary cities, wouldn’t it?

MELANIA ACTUALLY LOOKED CHIC

In that black two-piece dress with bias-cut, slightly gored skirt she wore yesterday.

But her high heels are still too high.

The Jackie O-plus-hooker look needs to fall slightly more decisively on the Jackie O side–for my taste.

WHY IS THIS ON THE HOME PAGE OF NYTIMES.COM?

[Late Monday night:]

“Fearing a trade war that could damage economic gains from their tax cut, Republicans, including House Speaker Paul D. Ryan, appealed to President Trump to relent on his steel and aluminum tariffs.”

WHAT economic gains have their tax cut precipitated? Is this again a question of “someone” kvelling to a reporter about ostensible gains? Where is the proof?

The paraphrase is repeated in the article. But properly stated, this would read: “Fearing a trade war that could damage economic gains the GOP claims their tax cut has produced. . . ”

Postscript: This has now [Tues. am] been slightly revised at NYTimes.com, both in the article and, more so, in the home-page tease. I hope they’ve learned something.

CREATING A NEW LANGUAGE–YOUR OWN

I remember interviewing Edith Le Clercq in her Upper West Side apartment in late 1981. I remember a portrait on display of Edith as a young woman, sixty years earlier. I remember a couple of framed dance photos of her celebrated ex-ballerina daughter; one was, I believe, the cover of a French dance magazine. Her daughter’s tragic fate had certainly humbled Edith; there was no trace of the hauteur that had alienated many, including her own daughter, during the years when Edith was George Balanchine’s mother-in-law.

Mother and daughter had been estranged many times over the years, but Muriel Stuart, who had brought Tanaquil to the School of American Ballet, told me that she thought they were now closer than ever. In any case, Edith told me that she had just been on the phone with Tanaquil, who, as I well knew, did not want anyone poking around in her past at that moment.

“Don’t tell him everything,” Tanaquil had told her mother. But Edith was someone who did want her place, and more than that, her daughter’s place in history to be documented. And one did feel that mother and daughter were equally strong willed.

Edith was modest, however, when it came to establishing her daughter in the balletic firmament. She told me she thought there were two ballets in which no one had ever equaled her daughter: I am almost certain that she said Balanchine’s La Valse and Robbins’ Afternoon of a Faun. And that, of course, made perfect sense. Each had been created for Tanaquil, had become classics in the repertory. Edith’s daughter had collaborated with a great choreographer to create a mutual self-portrait that had endured to became a canonical part of ballet tradition and lineage.

Consciously or not, dancers when they create something new are aware of the same possibility, and embrace it wholeheartedly. Second-best to creating the role is inheriting it under the watchful eye of a living choreographer. Somehow the entire trajectory seemed vivid to me when I went to NYCB earlier this week.

LINDSEY GRAHAM DOES NOT EVOLVE — HE GETS WORSE

He’s trying to trick us into attacking North Korea.

That’s not surprising.

When he’s not prostrate vowing undying loyalty to Donald Trump or traitorously partnering with Sen. Grassley to place Trump above the law, Graham is usually agitating for more war.

Exactly how many wars is the U.S. engaged in simultaneously at the moment, Sen. Graham?

Rep. Lieu tweets:

‘Sen Graham believes war would result in long term stability. Did US increase stability when we attacked Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria or Libya? NO. N Korea could retaliate by nuking S Korea, Japan & potentially Guam. Hundreds of thousands of Americans could die. NOT. WORTH. IT.”
