NOT SURE THAT’S POSSIBLE

But Mary Bottari at Commondreams.org thinks Simpson and Bowles have reached new highs/lows of hypocricy.

DOES AMERICA DESERVE OPERA?

It’s so telling:

Banksters who wrecked our economy are bailed out on our taxpayer dime and allowed to grab off more power and control over the economy than ever before.

While New York City Opera is allowed to shutter with hardly a whimper.

It’s exactly the way that, when Texaco bugged out of its sponsorship of the Met Opera broadcasts in the mid-00s, nary a voice in Washington was raised in protest—let along were any sponsorship offers forthcoming from those quarters.

We can, apparently, affoard a $1.3 trillion military expenditure per annum, but we cannot afford the relatively chump change it would take to put City Opera on a stable financival footing and to enable the prices to revert to popular, as they were intended to be when the company was formed.

AGAIN IT’S A QUESTION OF MORALITY

For Beat the Press, Dean Baker performs a task that should no longer be even necessary, but certainly is, given the corruption of our “mainstream” media—exposing the callous duplicity of Niall Ferguson.

Baker decries “the absurdities pushed by Ferguson and like-minded people in positions of power, in direct defiance of massive evidence to the contrary,” which “have ruined millions of lives and cost the world more than $10 trillion in lost output since the crisis began.”

WHAT’S AT STAKE

Senator Sanders e-blasts:

“At a time when the middle class is collapsing and poverty is increasing, these right-wing ideologues want to repeal virtually every piece of legislation passed in the last 80 years which protects the elderly, the children, the sick, the poor and the environment.”

I’VE GOT MINE SO SCREW THE REST OF THE COUNTRY

That’s the philosophy of Ted Cruz as well as the whole platoon of GOP unconscionables who are mugging the country.

But—not to fear—Ted doesn’t need Obamacare because his and his wife’s Cadillac health insurance allows their employers a tax break!!

Jim Hightower reports on Buzzflash.com that Cruz

“is covered by his wife’s policy. As a millionaire top executive at Goldman Sachs, she and her family are given gold-plated Cadillac coverage by the Wall Street giant. Goldman pays some $40,000 a year for her and Ted’s policy (more than most families make in a year) — a benefit-cost that the firm passes on to us taxpayers by deducting it from its corporate tax bill.”

NEW YORK CITY BALLET UPSWING?

I went back to NYCB again Wednesday night, and it was another good performance.   Really very good: putting-on-the-dog caliber!

Glad to see —

The principal women thinking about their backs.

The men considerably improved at every rank.

The female corps glittering in Jeu de Cartes.

The entire cast of The Four Seasons treating the ballet as if it were a masterpiece–and it responding in kind.

I”m looking forward to t’row’s matinee, opening of a Balanchine Short Stories bill of Sonnambula, Prodigal Son & Slaughter on Tenth Avenue.
