WE’RE ALL THIRD WORLDIES NOW!!

Paul Buchheit at Buzzflash.com:

“America’s middle class is sliding out of the developed world and toward third-world status. Column 9 makes it clear. Among all the nations of the world with at least a quarter-million adults, only Russia, Ukraine, and Lebanon are more unequal in their wealth distribution. Most of the third world countries are, sad to say and hard to believe, fairer to their middle classes than we are.”

Read his great piece in its entirety.

It’s interesting that the middle class spent the 1980s through the 00s in what I would have to call a state of virtually total denial about the economic realignment.

Can we wake up in time to save ourselves?

“A CONCERTED ATTEMPT TO SEIZE DEMOCRACY”

Richard Eskow at Nation of Change tells us exactly what Roberts and the gang are up to, and what we can do to stop them.  (And needless to say, how the Democratic Party has enabled the installation of GOP-extremist judiciary every step of the way.)

QUINTESSENCE OF AGENDA

William Boardman at Reader Supported News reminds us that Roberts has been opposed to the Voting Rights Act for at least thirty years.

WASTING NO TIME

Given what’s going on in Texas–discriminatory redistricting and voter I.D. here we come–there is no other way to view today’s right-wing Supreme Court majority except as a cell concerned primarily with advancing the interests of the Republican party in this county.

And it wouldn’t have happened if our confederacy-of-wimps Democratic Party had not been unable to sustain filibusters against Alito and Roberts.  Perhaps by now, however, the Repubs have taught the Dems something about sustaining filibusters.

Howard Fineman on his Political Read blog details what our radical and very cunning Chief Justice is up to.

THE SUPREME COURT VS. DEMOCRACY

As Senator Leahy tweeted:  the Court “has effectively struck down the core” of the Voting Rights Act.

Btw, wasn’t that the exact provision that was used to head off Republican attempts to disenfranchise voters in the last presidential election?

That would surely explain Roberts & co.’s intense interest in seeing it go.

WEIRD, BUT MAKES SENSE

Looking at notes from a conversation I had with the late William Dufty,  author of Sugar Blues and decades before that co-author of Billie Holiday’s autobiography.   I interviewed him for my Bankhead book at least twice, and have some tapes of him as well.

Anyway, in this conversation, he told me that Holiday had told him at one point in all sincerity that she couldn’t have a bank account because she had been an illegitimate child.

Was it possible for her to be so credulous, I thought to myself and out loud to him.  “It was no more insane than some of the other things that circumscribed her life.”  To Holiday it was “just more white-people craziness.”
