If ever we needed a graphic demonstration that hyper-gentrification kills cities, it’s the West Village. Basic services are less and less accessible, largely because of the rents. I guess if your servants do all the shopping, it’s OK. But it’s really not.
Now that Gourmet Garage and Integral Yoga Health Foods have closed, we have D’Agostino’s. Spare me.
The check out “girls” are great, but the store is not. It’s expensive, as was Gourmet Garage, but unlike Gourmet, there’s nothing special about what’s for sale at D’Ags.
I was talking to a woman on line there recently; like me she has lived in this neighborhood for decades. She told me that she and her husband do most of their shopping upstate in order to save money. “My kids can’t afford a beer in this neighborhood.”
