Arthur Hiller’s “Making Love” holds up a lot better than so much slick silliness from that dreadful, regressive decade. How sad and ironic that it actually set back the careers of Kate Jackson, Harry Hamlin, and Michael Ontkean. They are so good in it. But only Hamlin is even discussing it now, it seems. Ontkean has all but renounced it, which is doubly ironic given that it’s probably his best performance. There actually hasn’t ever been anything on screen quite like his role and characterization. But two men kissing drove people screaming out of theaters back in 1982.
