In his memoir, Unthinkable: Trauma, Truth, and the Trials of American Democracy, he rcounts how during his first run for Congress he was counseled to stick to the center, whatever that is. His response? “It is not my ambition to be in the political center, which blows around with the wind. It is my ambition to be in the moral center and to bring the political center to us.”
