MAYOR ADAMS, CITY COUNCIL MEMBER RIVERA & AND THE LANDMARKS “PRESERVATION” COMMISSION

colluded to prevent the Union Square South neighborhood from receiving the historic district designation it deserves. The developers saw it as their latest takeover spoils, and so that was that.

Mayor Mamdani seems content to perpetuate Adams’s terrible legacy with regard to landmark and neighborhood preservation. One historic building after another has been torn down for new luxury development since the neighborhood was upzzoned in 2019. The latest target is a very historic and scenic brick house at 86 University Place.

There are still sufficient buildings left in the district to warrant designation. LPC’s continued denial of designation for this neighborhood flies in the face of recommendations by the state and national registers of historic places. The corruption and dereliction of civic duty could not be more blatant
