Why are we not surprised that Amy Coney Barrett’s husband, Jesse Barrett, is defending Fox Corp., parent to Fox”News” in yet another defamation lawsuit?
You’d think if he had any respect for decency or propriety that he wouldn’t get near something like this.
And you’d think that Justice Barrett would stop refusing to let us know who her husband’s clients are, so, like, we could know when she should be recusing herself?
Alito’s refusal to recuse and Roberts’ apparent endorsement of that malfeasance should be the last straw. This is a majority that is contemptuous of this country and won’t even make the most perfunctory attempts to disguise that fact.
Long-time NYT editor and reporter Marilyn Bender published her book The Beautiful People in 1967, in which she kept close watch on the fashion industry, the fashion journalism industry, and the fashion celebrity industry. I don’t have the book in front of me, but she mentions how Times brass sent out a memo saying they wanted the Times to be not just needed but also loved and that was their rationale for juicing up the soft celebrity coverage. She was particularly highlighting the emerging coverage of high-consuming elite women who were now increasingly lionized for their fashion consumption.
There’s a throughline between this and the Times’ ruinous attempt to propitiate Republican partisans at the expense of the paper’s own reputation–let alone the harm done to the public interest.
Jamison Foser writes that “Criticized for treating unequal things as equal, for blurring asymmetries between candidates, the Times insists that to do otherwise would cause the paper to lose the trust of Republicans, who already do not trust the Times and never will, which means the Times just keeps lurching rightward to appeal to people who keep moving further and further away from it.”
It’s again a question of the Times importuning in the vain hope of being all things to all people–an impossible goal.
He sees what they did to both Clintons.
The Times’ brass’ duplicitous attempts to defend their lopsided false equivalences–by which they attach as much weight to lies as to truth, just so there are an equal number of positive and negative stories on each side–is disturbing. It is impelling them to trigger the return to office of a tyrant who will try to crush them. A lot of self-hatred as well as arrogance here, but don’t the two usually go hand in hand?

It was probably then that Mitch McConnell realized the Democrats weren’t up to fighting for anything, and he could trample our Constitution and judicial system at will.
Trump’s behavior, as well as his policies, turned America into a pariah and a laughing stock on the international stage. Biden needs to remind the country of that, now that Trump is insisting that we were respected as never before dudring his calamitous presidency.
