SEN. McCONNELL WAS HIDING UNDER A DESK

That’s how you deal with swine like Mitch McConnell:

The empowered women of the House wanted to present McConnell with a letter demanding that he let the Senate reopen government–and the Majority Leader took it on the lam.

The folks back in Kentucky loathe Mitch and he thinks that his only re-election hope is to turn into a pilot fish for the President.

HOGWASH FROM AMAZON

They’ve actually sent out a flier telling us to call Speaker Johnson and tell him we support their 3+ billion dollar boondoggle.

I will call Speaker Johnson’s office and tell them what Amazon mailed me and how adamantly opposed to this scam I am.

PAT McBRIDE LOUSADA

Balanchine was furious when she left NYCB to get married in 1950.

She was younger than I am now when I interviewed her in 1983; she seemed like a senior historical figure. Not that she was monolithic in any way–she was delightful.

She was one of the last survivors of Ballet Society and early NYCB.

Look for more interview material from her.

BRUCE WESLEY BOYCE

I’m used to walking through the courtyard and usually seeing his light on.

It’s not on anymore.

Here’s Michael Rovner’s obituary of Bruce in the West View News.

CAN AMERICA SAVE ITSELF?

Chauncey Vega at Salon doesn’t think so.

“For a variety of reasons including economic precariousness, an unresponsive political system, a fear of violence and punishment from and by the state, and a culture of distraction and entertainment, the American people are stuck in a state of learned helplessness.

“What social scientist and futurist John Feffer has described as “participatory totalitarianism” conditions the American people (and others in the West and elsewhere) to desire and approve of constant surveillance. It has become normalized and incentivized by social media platforms like Facebook and YouTube. People who are co-opted by “participatory totalitarianism” are increasingly incapable of being responsible and engaged democratic citizens because narcissistic, attention-seeking behavior has robbed them of core parts of their shared humanity.”

THOUGHT I’D SHARE THIS

wonderfully written speech by Philip Barry from Foolish Notion, which gave Tallulah the chance to be “herself” as well as multiple selves, and to deliver a rousing defense of “personality” acting.

“Writers, sculptors, painters, actors — we’re all the same — interpreters — and of the same thing — of life! And if, while you’re actually being Lady Macbeth — Pheadre — Roxane — what you will — I’m still just Sophie Wing, the personality again. Maybe I’m a spot or two closer to life than you are.”

My take: it’s all good.

HYPER-GENTRIFICATION TOO CLEVER FOR ITS OWN GOOD

If ever we needed a graphic demonstration that hyper-gentrification kills cities, it’s the West Village. Basic services are less and less accessible, largely because of the rents. I guess if your servants do all the shopping, it’s OK. But it’s really not.

Now that Gourmet Garage and Integral Yoga Health Foods have closed, we have D’Agostino’s. Spare me.

The check out “girls” are great, but the store is not. It’s expensive, as was Gourmet Garage, but unlike Gourmet, there’s nothing special about what’s for sale at D’Ags.

I was talking to a woman on line there recently; like me she has lived in this neighborhood for decades. She told me that she and her husband do most of their shopping upstate in order to save money. “My kids can’t afford a beer in this neighborhood.”

RACHEL MADDOW WAS CURIOUS

Last week she asked whether our presumed new Attorney General would be questioned at this week’s confirmation hearings about his role in persuading President George H.W. Bush in 1992 to pardon everyone indicted in the Iran-Contra scandal, thus ending the investigation and preempting legal exposure for that selfsame president.

William Barr, in other words, is an old hand on doing what we know that Trump will be telling him to do.

And Barr’s passive-aggressive assurances don’t mean bupkis.

TURNS OUT, RAND PAUL WANTS SOCIALIZED MEDICINE ONLY FOR HIMSELF

The GOP senator who issued dire prophecies that Obamacare would be the end of the world is now travelling to Canada, that sinkhole of socialized medicine, for his hernia operation.

MOVING LOCALLY, THINKING COSMICALLY

Merle Marsicano wrote in Dance Magazine in 1957:

“In this strange interval, in this curious time of the dance, familiar movement may be invested with a new temporal reality. The long reach of an arm can reveal avenues of eternity—the turn of a head can mirror echoes.”
